Advaya

Advaya, designed for a family of six, embodies simplicity, functionality and nostalgic charm. The design responds to the clients' desire for traditional living by prioritising a spacious, open layout on the main floor that makes movement easy for the elderly.

The living room is oriented towards a verdant outdoor tree — a soothing visual backdrop that also filters the harsh western sun. An open kitchen and dining offer seamless connectivity, and a cutout between the two floors keeps a central vantage point across the household.

A secluded sitting courtyard in the north-east corner lets the outdoors in. Throughout the home, clay and terracotta impart warmth and ensure natural cooling — reminiscent of traditional architectural practice.

The site's natural contours are used to extend a spacious partial basement beneath the south-east slope, offering versatile space for various activities. At road level, a discreetly positioned car park enhances spatial efficiency and integrates seamlessly with the surroundings.

Filler slabs are strategically positioned throughout the structure to block unwanted heat transfer, keeping the interior cool and comfortable through scorching temperatures. Their thermal insulation reduces the need for mechanical cooling and contributes to long-term energy saving — aligned with sustainable design principles.

Beyond function, the filler slabs add a distinctive visual element to Advaya's engaging narrative. Their earthy tones and textured surfaces harmonise with the other traditional materials.

The second floor holds three bedrooms, two positioned to face west for abundant daylight. One is slightly elevated, carving out private, functional seating within the circulation. A laundry utility, tucked into a corner, uses natural terracotta jaalis for constant ventilation.

Advaya — meaning 'without second' or 'unique' — is the culmination of this union of understated elements.
